Brothers in Valor

Part Three

Hamburg, 1942

Chapter Thirteen

Yet another Christmas season came and passed, only now Hitler’s armies were beginning to stumble. General Rommel retreated from British troops in North Africa, and the Russians stopped the German advance at Moscow and Stalingrad.

But the worst news for Germany came a few weeks before Christmas—Japan’s surprise bombing of Pearl Harbor. When the Americans joined the war, they were also fighting against Japan’s ally—us.

On New Year’s Eve, I was back on air-raid watch with Helmuth and Karl. This time we were alone, without an adult. At first, we thought it would be fun, but it didn’t turn out that way—instead, a terrible emptiness filled us as we remembered last year’s watch with Brother Worbs. So rather than listen to music, we bundled up and spent most of our time on the roof.

“Do you think American planes will bomb us?” I asked, while staring into the night sky.

“Yes,” said Helmuth. “Not tonight, but yes.”

“Just think, men from Utah might be in those bombers. We could be killed by fellow Mormons.” Karl shook his head.

In early January, Helmuth wrote his longest handbill.
